Topics:

"Counterterrorism and Regional Security in the Sahel" and "Managing Food Shortages and Humanitarian Crises"

Topic summary:

Topic A:

Throughout many years, terrorism has been a constant issue in Africa. Nevertheless, the Sahel Region has been subject to a quick rise in terrorism, violent extremism, neglected international organized crime, and the illegal trafficking of drugs and people. As well as poor sovereignty, and the recurring possibility of state administration collapsing. In light of these recent activities, the global community has provided more aid to this region, but it's not enough. This issue is more conflicted, due to the chance of its instability spreading to nearby areas and bordering nations. Addressing these dangers is crucial to the UN preventative approach, before it broadens and affects larger regions.

Topic B:

The Sahel faces severe humanitarian concerns as the area has been plagued with climate shocks, weak governance and territorial conflicts have driven widespread food and prime materials insecurity. Millions face the consequences of these unfortunate variables. For example, children encounter school disruption and mass malnutrition. Moreover, in 2025, humanitarian appeals exceed 4 billion USD, yet funding shortages and insecurity limit aid delivery in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. Projects such as the Great Green Wall aim to target food shortages and the causes of these lamentable events. Nonetheless, the Sahels situation worsens with insufficient funding that in general has caused a humanitarian crisis that is of the utmost importance for the African Union to resolve.
