Topics:
"Guidelines and Regulations for the Manufacturing and Employing of Satellites" and "Ethics for Development and Deployment of Anti-Satellite Weapons (ASAT’s)"
Topic Summary:
Topic A
The rapid growth of mega-constellations, and other satellite networks - which are composed of thousands of satellites - which are deployed in the Earth’s low orbit have revolutionized many facets of modern interconnectedness and technology. UNOOSA addresses the need for standardized and effective regulations in the manufacturing of said satellites. These guidelines would enforce and focus on the concepts of minimizing space debris, ensuring robust hardware, sustainable resource use, and proper safety features. UNOOSA’s scope of debate would include discussing and establishing proper universal guidelines for the production of satellite technologies, addressing cooperation among nations, and finding proper balance between commercial interests and sustainable development. This committee aims to create proper frameworks that bring about global cooperation and keep space open to all nations.
Topic B
The development and deployment of Anti-Satellite Weapons (Known as ASATs) brings about profound ethical concerns. UNOOSA’s scope of debate centers on establishing proper guidelines to manage the creation, testing, and potential use of ASAT’s, which are designed for the disabling or destruction of critical satellites. This committee aims to examine the implications that are brought about by the presence of ASATs. There is the aim to balance national interests with a collective need for the peaceful preservation of space. This committee does also look to prevent possible arms races in space, and the proper development of guidelines regarding ASATs.
